Biophytum sensitivum belongs to the wood sorrel family (Oxalidaceae) and originates from Southeast Asia. Although it resembles the well-known sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica) and its leaflets also fold when touched, the two species are not closely related. With its upright stem and circular arrangement of delicate pinnate leaves, it resembles a miniature palm tree, which is why it is sometimes called the “South Sea Palm”.
Biophytum species are self-fertile and can reproduce by self-seeding. After flowering, the ripe seed capsules burst open and disperse the seeds naturally. Under suitable conditions, the plant can quickly establish a small self-sustaining colony, making it especially interesting for terrariums and tropical indoor plant collections.
Biophytum sensitivum typically forms a leaf crown about 10–15 cm wide and can reach up to 40 cm in height, although most plants remain more compact at around 15–20 cm tall.
