Cercis siliquastrum (Judas tree)
The Cercis siliquastrum, commonly known as the Judas tree, is a small deciduous tree or large shrub native to southern Europe and western Asia. Its main ornamental feature is the abundance of pink to purplish-pink flowers that appear in early spring, even before the leaves emerge. The blossoms often grow directly from the branches and trunk, creating a striking display.
The Judas tree typically reaches 5–10 meters in height and develops a broad, spreading crown. Its round, heart-shaped leaves turn yellow in autumn. It thrives in sunny, warm, and sheltered positions, tolerates moderate drought, and prefers well-drained soil.
An excellent specimen tree, it provides a spectacular burst of spring color. Young plants can be sensitive to frost, so it is best planted in a protected location.
